Already two of my favorite American music festivals have come and gone and I have missed them both. Merelfest is one of the biggest in the roots and Americana festival calender and took place last weekend in North Carolina. By all accounts from my pals backstage it was a great event again this year. I also missed Springfest way down there in Florida, which is run by my good friends Beth and Randy Judy. I had a decent excuse of course having been in Ireland playing music at the time.
Springfest and its sister festival Magnoliafest, for me bookend the festival season here in America. I have not missed a Magnoliafest in 6 years and only missed Springfest because Ireland called me home that same weekend every year. These two festivals are smaller in size than Telluride or Merlefest but what they lack in size they make up for in spirit. There is a great affection among the many regular musicians who tour the festival circuit every year for this musical event. Those who attend the events too have a great camaraderie and the atmosphere is always magic. So over the summer months I will be hosting a series of podcasts to lead up to the next Magnoliafest in October. I will be playing music from artists who have played there and others who just embody the musical spirit of these unique festivals.
So I hope I can give you some idea of what I feel when I head south every year to Live Oak in Florida and play you some good music along the way.
Enjoy the show.
