April 1st, 2004 Issue 20 What a day to be back in your mailbox. April 1st and your favorite Irish fool returns with the first newsletter in weeks. As you all know, I have been on the road with Irish band Altan and then took a quick trip down to Florida to recharge my batteries and hear some great music. So settle down as spring is here, summer is on its way and JigTime has lots of great news, reviews and articles for you in the coming weeks and months. Unhappy with your JigTime newsletter? Want to switch to a different roots and Celtic music provider? Well now you can with our handy little Unsubscribe function. (Unsubscribing is not recommended for those with a heart condition or who may be pregnant) In this Issue Springfest kicks off the festival season. It was a nice change from the cold and windy Northeast to head to sunny Florida for the weekend and spend some time in the company of the best musicians in the country. Suwannee Springfest is run by the same people who run Magnoliafest and is set in the very beautiful Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Over the weekend I got a chance to hear bands and performers like Donna the Buffalo, Jim Lauderdale, Vassar Clements, Laura Love, Bela Fleck, Guy Clark, Darrell Scott and many many more. In fact the event had so much stuff I have had to split the review in two with part one looking at the events on Friday. Next week we will have part two of the review plus a full picture album of many of the great musicians who appeared at Springfest 2004. http://www.jigtime.com/springfestreview.htm Lunasa's New York show reviewed Our own Alice Farrell braved the chilly New York streets once again to go hear Irish band Lunasa on their second visit to the Big Apple in less than a week. Lunasa have a new album out released independently since their spilt from Green Linnet but distributed in the U.S. by Compass Records. The band, by all accounts were on fire and left our poor Alice gasping for more. Read more of what our lady of the New York Night thought about Lunasa http://www.jigtime.com/lunasany.htm Playing Album Review Catchup I go away for just a few weeks and when I return I find my apartment filled with new CDs all begging me to listen to them. Well I have finally sat down to have a listen and in the coming weeks you can read about great new releases from Sam Bush, The Gibson Brothers, Lunasa, Mozaik, Neil Mulligan and a host of other titles I am sure you will love. This week though with my festival fever still running high and Merlefest less than a month away I have to mention two titles of great importance to me and the rest of the music loving world. To find out what they are click below: http://www.jigtime.com/merlealbums.htm A look back at the Altan Tour I wanted to say thanks to everyone who sent us good wishes during the recent Altan tour and especially the thousands of people who came to the 18 shows we played in little more than 3 weeks. We made many new friends and caught up with some old pals as well. For those of you who want to read what it was like to traipse around with one of Ireland's best ever traditional bands I am leaving the tour log up for you all to peruse. Look out in the future for more blogs and all of Altan and myself look forward to seeing all of you again on the road when we next tour together. http://www.jigtime.com/blog That is it for this week. I hope there was something there for you and if you have ideas of what we should cover then feel free to email me and let me know what you want to see. Until then stay safe and well and happy.
