From Jigtime at jigtime.com Wed Feb 4 19:25:46 2004 From: Jigtime at jigtime.com (Jigtime at jigtime.com) Date: Wed, 4 Feb 2004 19:25:46 -0500 Subject: [Jigtime] Newsletter 18 Message-ID: <002d01c3eb7e$9a2c5870$6400a8c0@computername> JigTime News Music at your Fingertips! February 4, 2004 Issue 18 I wrote my weekly newsletter last night with my regular attempts at humor and levity. Today I woke up today to the sad news that my mother Ailish Cutliffe had passed away. I thought that maybe I should delay the newsletter for a while. I did delay it for most of the day while I tried to organize a flight to Ireland at the weekend but once I had done everything I could at this end I decided to go ahead and get the newsletter out, with one difference. I dedicate it to my darling mammy. She loved music and laughter and never questioned my path in life. So the next time you hear from me will be from my own wet and windy Donegal and I will look out on to Lough Swilly and think of Ailish Cutliffe and all of you. Sleep well mammy. This week; Eddi Reader recommends singer Declan O'Rourke, Sam Bush is King of the World, Luka Bloom gets gentle, Just an American Boy's DVD release and Dana's Thread of Blue. Unhappy with your JigTime newsletter? Want to switch to a different roots and Celtic music provider? Well now you can with our handy little Unsubscribe function. (Unsubscribing is not recommended for those with a heart condition or who may be expecting) In this Issue Eddi Reader and Declan O'Rourke It must be nice for young Dublin singer/songwriter to have fans like Paul Brady among his fans. I have only just heard of Declan through Eddi Reader's website where she recommends him highly. She has even arranged some gigs in Glasgow for him on February 18th and 19th. Eddi herself sees the U.S. release of her latest album The Songs of Robert Burns this week on Compass Records. http://www.jigtime.com/reader.htm Steve Earle's DVD release The long awaited DVD release of Amos Poe's documentary on Steve Earle is just around the corner. Just an American Boy has been shown in select theaters around the U.S. but this will give Steve's legions of fans who didn't get a chance to see something they can keep. I got my copy in the mail and watched it just today before writing the newsletter. http://www.jigtime.com/steveearledvd.htm Luka Bloom is trying to put us to sleep Most singers would hate to be told their album is putting people to sleep but Irish singer Luka Bloom is encouraging us to use his new CD to do just that. A departure from the big guitar sound he is known for, Luka has made a very quiet album indeed, played gently on his Spanish guitar. The album called Before Sleep Come is out now and is available at Luka's own website http://www.jigtime.com/lukabloom.htm Dana's Threads of Blue Dana Mase has just released her fourth album and although it is very hard to define it has enough inspiration from so many folk cultures that it certainly belongs on my CD shelf. It has hints of Dido, Enya and even Alanis Morisette but has a lot more besides. Very traditional fans of bluegrass or Celtic music wont find anything here but a lot of people who like more contemporary sounds will find a lot of great songs and wonderfully played arrangements on this CD. http://www.jigtime.com/dana.htm Sam Bush about to crown himself King It has been a few years but finally Sam Bush has managed to get into the studio to record his own album instead of playing on just about everyone else's. I for one am looking forward to this release more than most. I spent most of last year at festivals where Sam and his band were blowing audiences away with their amazing playing. It's about time some of those songs got recorded in the studio. Sam is also hitting the road with his old pal Garrison Keillor and A Prairie Home Companion. http://www.jigtime.com/sambushnews.htm Moya tour dates update Moya has finalized her dates for the North American tour and will be hitting a city near you very soon. Her new album Two Horizons hit the US stores yesterday. The event will feature the cream of Atlanta's traditional Irish players including Katherine Irwin Thomas, Mike Simpson, Lisa Cutliffe and members of the Bordercollies among others. JigTime will have a full preview in the coming weeks but for now check out their website at http://www.irishinmarch.com That is it for this week. I hope there was something there for you. Next week we will hopefully have a working blog to test ahead of the Altan tour so I will need you as my guinea pigs.
