January 28, 2004 Issue 17 Another week, another JigTime newsletter. We are at issue 17 now and I really hope you are enjoying Our weekly look at the world of roots music from all over the world. Next Monday is Groundhog Day here in the U.S.A and although the fine folks in Pennsylvania may have Punxsutawney Phil as their little furry meteorologist down south we have General Beau Lee, Ph.D., Georgia's Official Weather Prognosticator. Now many of my European or worldwide readers may wonder what I am on about. Groundhog Day is an annual event where these very talented animals emerge from their little homes and if they don't see their shadow then Spring is just around the corner. If they do spy themselves then it means another six weeks of winter. We certainly could do without that this year. While this may be an American tradition its roots can be traced back to Celtic Myth where people believed that animals had special powers on certain days between the winter equinox and spring solstice. Folklore from France and Germany would tell that when bears and groundhogs came out of their winter dens too early they would be frightened by their shadow and hibernate for another 4 to 6 weeks. And you thought JigTime was just about music! Enough waffling though and on with the music news his week; Altan add date to U.S. tour, Chatham County Line, Celtic Connections last few days, Blueridge new album and Fraser Fifield makes some very cool sounds. Unhappy with your JigTime newsletter? Want to switch to a different roots and Celtic music provider? Well now you can with our handy little Unsubscribe function. (Unsubscribing is not recommended for those with a heart condition or who may be expecting) In this Issue Altan add Minnesota to U.S. Tour Altan have added an extra show to the forthcoming three week tour of the U.S. The band will play the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis MN on Tuesday March 2nd. This brings the tour to 18 cities in 15 states kicking off in Georgia on February 27th. Click Below for a full list of dates. http://www.jigtime.com/altantour2004.htm Chatham County Line Chatham County Line look and sound very much like a traditional Bluegrass band. However, they have their own unique spin on music with original songs and a great joy coming to the fore in their live shows as well as on their latest CD release, simply called Chatham County Line. For more on this North Carolina outfit check here http://www.jigtime.com/chathamcountyline.htm Scotsman Fraser Fifield hits all the right notes Former Old Blind Dog and current member of Salsa Celtica, Fraser Fifield has a new solo album out. Recorded at his home studio it runs the gauntlet of musical styles and is a truly rich, layered and beautifully played collection. The album, called Honest Water has been released on Fraser's own record label Tanar Records. JigTime will have a full review of the album soon but for now here is a preview of this talented Scot and his music. http://www.jigtime.com/fraserfifield.htm Blueridge new CD in stores now. Blueridge have been around for a long time in various forms. The current lineup has only one of the original members left with two member being in the band for just a few months. You wouldn't know it to listen to them though. Both live and on their new CD they sound like a band who have played together for many years. The band are doing some shows in the coming weeks to showcase the latest release. Get along if you can http://www.jigtime.com/blueridge.htm Celtic Connections - Last few days By all accounts this year's Celtic Connections festival is going even better than expected. There have been lots of great concerts as well as workshops and some wonderful new artists emerging over the last week or so. In the coming year many of the new artists will be on the road and making a name for themselves. There are just 5 days left in this year's festival but there is so much to do in that few days. For a roundup of the best of what's left click below. http://www.jigtime.com/celticconnections2.htm Music of Ireland in Atlanta JigTime is glad to be part of the Music of Ireland concert which will be one of the first of many shows all over the country in the lead up to St Patrick's Day. I was originally going to be their MC but due to the Altan Tour coming up I had to bow out. I am pleased to say they have easily replaced me with one of my favorite people in the Atlanta music scene, Howard Williams, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer and all round good guys. The event will feature the cream of Atlanta's traditional Irish players including Katherine Irwin Thomas, Mike Simpson, Lisa Cutliffe, Kathleen Donohoe and members of the Bordercollies among others.
