January 22, 2004 Issue 16 Hello and welcome to yet another JigTime weekly newsletter. This week of course it is time for the State of the JigTime Address. After months of deliberating with advisors and aides I have the final speech ready and it is this; It's all good! Simple as that really. The world of roots, Americana, Irish and Celtic music is as alive and healthy as ever and I for one am happy to be part of the whole thing. Having said that, things are about to get very busy. January is almost gone and spring is just around the corner. Not much consolation for my friends up north who are working through arctic temperatures. Don't despair though; as festival season is almost here, St Patrick's Day is looming and just beyond that we have Easter and an entire summer of musical fun and frolics. So put the kettle on, get out some treats and settle yourselves down for this week's news. Enjoy. This week; JigTime on the road with Altan, Moya heads to Europe, New Bluegrass book and CD released, Dervish win freedom of Sligo, Larry Keel Documentary, Frankie Kennedy Winter School report and 4 Men and a Dog live dates. Unhappy with your JigTime newsletter? Want to switch to a different roots and Celtic music provider? Well now you can with our handy little Unsubscribe function. (Unsubscribing is not recommended for those with a heart condition or who may be expecting) In this Issue JigTime on tour with Altan You know I don't just sit around writing this newsletter all the time. Occasionally I get out of the house too and for the last part of February and through most of March I will be out of the house a lot. I am glad to announce that I am going on the road with Irish traditional band Altan as their tour manager and merchandising guy among other tasks. Altan is one of the most successful traditional Irish bands ever and play to packed houses worldwide. They are also genuinely the nicest bunch of people you could ever hope to meet. So for this spring tour of the USA I want to bring you all with me. I am setting up a special Blog page and will try as best I can to update the tour diary every day with pictures. I will also be working on JigTime from the road so don't think you are getting a break from my weekly nonsense. I am very excited about the 3 week tour of 14 States and 17 cities and I want to meet as many of you as I can. For a complete list of tour dates http://www.jigtime.com/altantour2004.htm Rural Roots of Bluegrass I was browsing the excellent Native Ground website and discovered a new book and CD combo that have just been released. The book, written by Wayne Erbsen, a teacher, writer and musician in North Carolina is a very impressive piece of work. It not only has a history of bluegrass music and the styles it evolved from but has pictures, songs with lyrics and tablature and a short history of each song. The album is a 14 track CD on which Wayne plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle and banjo and leaves the vocals to the ever wonderful Laura Boosinger http://www.jigtime.com/erbsen.htm 4 Men and a Dog - live shows ahead Following a hectic few days at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, 4 Men and Dog are taking a break. Not for long though. They are just recharging for more rocket fueled gigs all through March which will take them to a few European cities. With their latest album Maybe Tonight still selling well all over Europe the band are glad to be back doing what they do best. http://www.jigtime.com/fourmen.htm Moya kicks off European tour in Germany Moya Brennan kicked off her European tour yesterday in Darmstadt, Germany. Moya is on the road promoting her latest hit album Two Horizons which is out now in Europe and is due for release in February in the U.S.A.. Fans of Moya's in the states will also be able to the Donegal songstress and her seven piece band next month too with shows currently booked mostly in the Northeast. http://www.jigtime.com/moyaeurope.htm Larry Keel- An unlikely movie star Larry Keel is an amazing guitarist and performer. He is known and loved by some of the best musicians in bluegrass and has many excellent albums under his belt. So why then do so few people know about him? James Ryan Gielen followed Larry and his band throughout 2002 to find out what drives him and the resulting documentary Beautiful Thing has its world premiere at Merlefest 2004 http://www.jigtime.com/larrykeel.htm Mark Pippinger's School Report Mark Pippinger is a medical man from Little Rock Arkansas. He has a love of Irish music that is a huge part of his life. He recently made the pilgrimage to Donegal for the world famous Frankie Kennedy winter School and came back reasonable intact with words and pictures to prove he was there. http://www.jigtime.com/frankiereview.htm . Music of Ireland concert in Atlanta JigTime is glad to be part of the Music of Ireland concert which will be one of the first of many shows all over the country in the lead up to St Patrick's Day. The event will feature the cream of Atlanta's traditional Irish players including Katherine Irwin Thomas, Mike Simpson, Lisa Cutliffe and members of the Bordercollies among others. JigTime will have a full preview in the coming weeks but for now check out their website at http://www.irishinmarch.com That is it for this week. I hope there was something there for you. Next week we will hopefully have a working blog to test ahead of the Altan tour so I will need you as my guinea pigs.
