From Jigtime at jigtime.com Wed Jan 14 14:39:02 2004 From: Jigtime at jigtime.com (Jigtime at jigtime.com) Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2004 14:39:02 -0500 Subject: [Jigtime] Newsletter Number 15 Message-ID: <000801c3dad6$12e3ee90$6400a8c0@computername> JigTime News The first of 2004! January 15, 2004 Issue Fifteen Another week has slipped by and here we are with Issue 15. And they said it wouldn't last. Well thanks to you lovely people it has reached week 15 and every week we have new people signing up to read about the music of Ireland. Scotland, the Appalachian mountains and all points beyond. Of course after the American president announces plans to send people to Mars today we will certainly be getting lots more hits from even further afield. I believe the Celts may well have come from there originally. Let's face it, bagpipes are not of this world. So put the kettle on, get out some treats and settle yourselves down for this week's news. Enjoy. This week; Earl Scruggs turns 80 in style, Altan USA dates announced, Celtic Connections opens, New JigTime search option. Plus reviews of shows by Darrell Scott, Liz Carroll and John Doyle Unhappy with your JigTime newsletter? Want to switch to a different roots and Celtic music provider? Well now you can with our handy little Unsubscribe function. (Unsubscribing is not recommended for those with a heart condition or who may be expecting) In this Issue Happy Birthday Earl It is incredible to think that Earl Scruggs has been playing banjo for 76 years and is showing no signs of stopping. Last week friends of the great banjo player gathered in Nashville to surprise him with a very glamorous birthday party. Read all about Earl and those who attended the big bash. http://www.jigtime.com/earlbirthday.htm Altan's first US tour of 2004 Altan will be jumping on a plane next month for another tour of the USA. America is fast becoming their second home to the delight of their thousands of fans all over the country. This tour will take in 17 cities in less than a month and even takes them right through the St Patrick's celebrations and beyond. Check out their schedule right here. http://www.jigtime.com/altantour2004.htm Darrell Scott review Last Friday I gathered together a gang of unsuspecting people and headed to Eddies Attic in Decatur in the suburbs of Atlanta to listen to singer/songwriter Darrell Scott. Darrell and the younger Packway Handle Band treated the capacity crowd to a night of wonderful acoustic music and song. http://www.jigtime.com/darrellscottshow.htm Liz Carroll and John Doyle in New York While I was out gallivanting in the deep south our lady of leisure in New York, Alice Farrell headed off to hear the fine fiddling of Liz Carroll and the amazing guitar work of John Doyle. Read what Alice had to say about the duo who are both well known names in traditional music in their own right. http://www.jigtime.com/johnliz.htm Celtic Connections opens in Glasgow If there wasn't so much good stuff going on over this way I might be very jealous at all my friend who are at the Celtic Connections Festival which has just opened in Glasgow, Scotland. For a brief view of what you can expect to see there this week go to; http://www.jigtime.com/celticconnections1.htm New search option After some nagging from someone who writes for JigTime I finally gave up and added a search option to JigTime. Now you can find any article I have ever written on the site by a simple keyword search. I am still fine tuning it so if you accidentally find my shopping list from last weekend then feel free to do a shop for me. Just don't forget the biscuits. You can find the search box on the front page for now until it is tested and working flawlessly. Then we will put in on every page. http://www.jigtime.com Extra Extra! One piece of breaking news is that I will be the host (or is it MC?) for a concert of Irish music here in Atlanta in March. There will be a full preview in next week's newsletter but for now have a peek at what its al about at their own website. http://www.IrishinMarch.com Support JigTime Don't forget you can support JigTime in many ways.
