January 7, 2004 Issue Fourteen Well hello once again and welcome to JigTime's weekly newsletter. This is my first of 2004 and I am glad to say there appears to be no shortage of news about the music we all love for the coming year. There are so many bands on tour, so many good recordings coming out and so many great festivals and concerts to tell you about in the coming 12 months that I am tired already. I am however looking forward to the first concert of 2004 that I wil get a chance to see and that is in Atlanta this week. The amazing Darrell Scott is appearing at Eddie's Attic at the invitation of T-Dawg who is certainly one of the best promoters of good roots and acoustic music anywhere. See a previous article of mine on the Darrell Scott gig for details http://www.jigtime.com/darrellscott.htm As I told you last week, in 2004 we will have lots more people out and about and writing for us and this week we will introduce you to one of those wonderful people. So settle yourselves and enjoy. So the first newsletter of the year includes ; Doc Watson to be honored at the Grammies, The Pipes they are a Calling, Teada, Irish language snubbed, Darol Anger's new project, Laurie McClain and so much more. Again for any of you who have found yourselves a little peeved by my weekly ramblings just send a mail to info at jigtime.com and say "John go away I am already happy with my long distance provider" or just click on this link to unsubscribe. Unsubscribe (This is a real unsubscribe but doctors recommend weaning yourself off the newsletter slowly) In this Issue Doc Watson and James Galway honored by Grammy committee News this week that Doc Watson will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Grammy Awards in February. In the same week flautist James Galway will be honored at a luncheon for classical musicians, also organized by the recording academy http://www.jigtime.com/docaward.htm The Pipes are a Calling This week we want to welcome a new writer for JigTime. Isabelle Devaux is a piper from France who now lives in the USA. As Isabelle will tell you there are many different types of pipes spread among just as many cultures. This week she will try to unravel the mystery of just what kind of pipes you are listening to. http://www.jigtime.com/pipes.htm Teada on the road forever? Teada haven't been around that long but looking at their list of tour dates they are certainly making up some lost time by touring constantly over the coming months. The will be playing in Ireland, England, Scotland and the USA in the coming months and if you get a chance you should try to catch this lively young band. If not, they have a great new album out worldwide right now http://www.jigtime.com/teada.htm Irish Language being snubbed by EU I don't want JigTime to ever be a political forum as it is about the music and the people who make it. But the Irish government seem to be making a bit of a political blooper by agreeing to the exclusion of our Irish language as an official EU language. Musicians and poets alike should be most angered about this amazing lack of vision by those who are supposed to be in charge. http://www.jigtime.com/irish.htm Darol Anger's new project is launched Darol Anger is an amazing guy. He is one of the finest fiddlers in the world but is also one of the most imaginative lending his skills to many great projects over the years. His latest is called the American Fiddle Ensemble and is sure to turn a few heads in the music world. http://www.jigtime.com/darolanger.htm Laurie McClain's tribute to Kate Wolf Laurie McClain is a singer/songwriter from California who took the brave step of moving to the shark infested waters of Nashville. She has released a tribute album to Kate Wolf and happily has done justice to the songs of a songwriting legend. She is also a pretty good songwriter herself. http://www.jigtime.com/lauriemcclain.htm Support JigTime Don't forget you can support JigTime in many ways.
