From Jigtime at jigtime.com Wed Nov 26 10:47:03 2003 From: Jigtime at jigtime.com (Jigtime at jigtime.com) Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2003 10:47:03 -0500 Subject: [Jigtime] Happy Thanksgiving from JigTime Message-ID: <003d01c3b434$8ac4acb0$6400a8c0@computername> JigTime News Happy Thanksgiving! (unless you are outside the US in which case Happy Thursday) November 26thth 2003 Issue Eight Well Thanksgiving is here in the US so I have to let out a couple of pairs of trousers for Friday morning. For those of you who, like me didn't know how the Americans like to celebrate this day just follow these simple steps. First just take a typical Christmas dinner then add about 20 different side dishes, fill your home with family and extended family and overeat. Then settle on the couch to watch the American football game or catch highlights from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on television. All in all it is a very peaceful, fattening holiday and I am glad to say I have been welcomed into many homes to share it with people's families over the last few years. So wherever you are in the world have a very peaceful day. But before you all start stuffing your turkeys, get a taste of what's new in the world of music and avoid those awkward silences with Uncle Bert. Amaze people with your knowledge of Celtic music or drop a few names from the world of Bluegrass. You will have your family hanging on every word with your newly acquired street cred. Yes the JigTime newsletter IS the ultimate party companion. News this week: Steve Earle Contest, Planxty, Cold Mountain - the Movie, The Frankie Kennedy Winter School and more. Unsubscribe (This is a real unsubscribe unlike many but the side effects may include dry mouth, nausea and the guilt involved in leaving me here all alone) In this Issue Steve Earle Contest Update We are one week into the Steve Earle contest and have had hundreds of entries from all over the world We have had entries from 48 of the 50 US states as well as countries as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Wales and France to name just a few. Seems like our Steve is well known and loved everywhere. If you haven't entered yet then shame on you. The questions are easy. The answers are a little more difficult though. Have a look and see how you do. And don't forget you can win some really cool prizes http://www.jigtime.com/steveearle/steveearlecomp.htm Planxty are back and making waves already There are few (if any) more important bands in the history of Irish Traditional Music than Planxty. I have had the great pleasure of seeing them play many times when I was young. The news that they are to reform for some shows in Ireland is up there with the most important and happy music news to come out of the old country in many years. http://www.jigtime.com/planxty.htm Cold Mountain soundtrack will rival O Brother Christmas Day sees the release of Cold Mountain to an eager public who want to see just how Hollywood has transformed the bestselling book by Charles Frazier. Music fans however are eager to hear just what sort of soundtrack T Bone Burnett has put together this time. http://www.jigtime.com/coldmountain.htm The Frankie Kennedy Winter School Only a month away from a very special gathering of musicians in my home County. This year's lineup is as impressive as ever and if you are within spitting distance of Donegal at the end of December then there's only one place you need to be. http://www.jigtime.com/fkws.htm >From the Cradle to the Stage A new book by Alan Swan is a must for any discerning follower of Irish music. Whether you like Classical or Traditional or Rock this book has contributions from all areas of the Irish musical world. The proceeds from it also go to a very good cause. http://www.jigtime.com/cradle.htm S.H.A.R.E. - Songs of Hope, Awareness and Recovery for Everybody Some of Nashville's best have put together a collection of songs about alcohol and drug abuse. Darrell Scott, John Prine and Kathy Mattea are just some of the great people who have songs on this important album. http://www.jigtime.com/share.htm Some site updates I finally got around to getting some pictures from a recent show featuring Ricky Skaggs and the Chieftains up on the site. To set the scene I have republished a review I did of the show for Irishabroad.com at the time. Enjoy. http://www.jigtime.com/rickychief.htm Support JigTime Don't forget you can support JigTime in many ways.
