Acoss The Pond - Episode 46 - The String Sisters
Written by John Cutliffe
Saturday, 08 August 2009

The String SistersThis week on Across The Pond I have two tracks from the incredible String Sisters. The String Sisters is a collaboration of the Celtic music world’s top female fiddlers; Annbjørg Lien from Norway, Catriona Macdonald from Shetland, Liz Carroll and Liz Knowles from the US, Mairead ni Mhaonaigh (Altan) from Ireland and Emma Härdelin from Sweden. Originally brought together for a special one-time show at Glasgow’s annual Celtic Connections festival to celebrate each of their region’s musical traditions, the results of this live recording contain some of the most brilliant fiddling heard in Celtic music. On Live, the String Sisters are joined by David Milligan (piano), Conrad Ivitsky (double bass), Tore Bruvoll (guitar) and James Mackintosh (drums).

This is one of most beautiful, uplifting and inspiring albums I have heard in years. So expect more tracks from it in future shows. It is on repeat mode on my iPod in the car righ now.

Also on this week's show music from Dr. John, Mark Knopfler, Seamus Begley and Stephen Cooney, The Bluegrass Cardinals and more.

So please tell your friends to listen on on www.icrfm.ie or to the Archive here. Or you can even subscribe directly to the podcast on i-Tunes. Also don't forget to join me on Facebook at the Across The Pond fan page

Across the Pond - E45 - Streaming Along
Written by John Cutliffe
Friday, 31 July 2009

Hi everyone. Another week in the deep south has brought some nice rain but the air remains humid and hot. It seems we also have a large snake living just outside our window. I haven't seen it yet but both Emily and Lupa have spotted a large black reptile in the grass near them. The good news is the black colour which means it is more than likely a rat snake or if not at least one of the non venomous varieties that live in Georgia. Still not something you want the kids to go and play with but it will keeps the rodent population down so she is staying. ( Emily decided the snakes name was Daisy and since we are unlikely to check its gender we let the name stick)

Levon Helm - Electric DirtI had fun doing this week's show because I streamed live video from my studio in the closet. Now I am not a pretty sight by any means but it was fun knowing there were a few viewers keeping me company while i made the show. The way it was set up all they heard was me talking and not the music but it was still fun to do and I will have the new equipment soon and will be able to do a more live show.

The music on the show was pretty good this week too. I had music from The Pride of New York, Catie Curtis, Levon Helm and many others. Please tell your friends to add my Facebook Across the Pond page to their list of favourites.

Across The Pond - 44 - Tallulah Gorge
Written by John Cutliffe

The City of Tallulah FallsIt was a fun week here in Georgia. Last weekend Lupa and I headed for the hills. We went for a long and tough walk into Tallulah Gorge. This is the wild and beautiful place where they shot the movie Deliverance. We rewarded ourselves after the trek with a visit to Mama G's restaurant in Clayton Georgia. It was a lovely meal and we were treated like stars by our busy but attentive waiter Challen.

So if you ever find yourself in the hills of North Georgia you could do a lot worse than visit this wonderful restaurant. Of course there are a lot more great things to see up that way including the amazing gorge itself, the falls and the lovely little town that sits on the edge of the Gorge.

On this week's show we have lots of music from Scotland including tunes from Tony McManus, Dougie Mcclean and Shooglenifty. Also there is music from Frank Tovey and Little Feat. So enjoy the show and tell all your friends.

See you next week
